How To Get Your Real Estate License in Ontario

Interested in finding out more about the updated real estate education program to become a Realtor in Ontario?

Anyone who wants to sell real estate in Ontario will need to take the new program from RECO, and given by Humber College.

The new real estate program in Ontario has been completely overhauled from the old OREA course that was in place for decades. So much has happened in the real estate industry in Ontario, so naturally it was time to update the program accordingly. Registration for OREA courses closed last year in spring 2019, so if your goal is to become a real estate agent in Toronto, for example - or anywhere in Ontario - you must take the the new Real Estate Salesperson Program which has been designed by RECO and delivered by Humber College.

So, a new real estate program - great! But the challenges with a new educational course are real. I am one of the many students of the first cohort, and we have hit many bumps in the road (there have been errors in the program that have now, months later, been slowly corrected by Humber), but one of the scariest parts was the exam.

What I’ve learned so far about the new Humber College Real Estate Salesperson Program in Ontario:

  1. If you push hard, you can get your real estate license to sell real estate in Ontario in about 6 or 7 months. This also greatly depends on the availability of the in-person exams and Simulation Sessions in your area. Students who live closer to a larger city will have more flexibility in scheduling and these in-person elements of the program will run more frequently. At the time of writing this, I know some friends who have had their first Simulation Session cancelled due to low enrolment. I’m hoping this improves as more new real estate students catch up with the program in the future.

  2. You can take as long as 2 years to complete the new Humber College Real Estate Salesperson Program.

  3. The program is mostly online but you have to do in-person exams and 2 in-person Simulation Sessions (5 days and 4 days in length, respectively).

  4. My favourite part of RECO’s new real estate program was the Simulation Sessions. Asking questions in-person was so satisfying and the facilitators were awesome. Our class of 24 students were also very nice, friendly people and there were students of all ages, backgrounds and experience levels.

  5. If you have questions about course content, you can contact Humber Real Estate Education directly and ask them anything Program-related. After all, that’s what you’re paying for! Call them at 1-888-626-3090 and make sure you listen to the extension options and choose the option for questions about program content. You can also call Humber if you are having technical issues with their website.

  6. If you’re having trouble grasping some of the harder concepts in Course 1, be sure to check out the video study guide I built for Humber Real Estate Salesperson Program Course 1. It takes the hardest theories like Land Registration and simplifies things in video & audio format. Click here to check out the free lesson about the Registry System vs. Land Titles System.
